Bedford Police Add Extra Patrols this Summer to Help Curb Speeding

Bedford Police Chief says summer time doesn't equal speeding time.

The longest day of the year is here and so is summer, and while many Bedford residents are no doubt headed to their beach house, lake house or favorite vacation spot, those staying in the area should be advised that Bedford Police are taking speeding seriously.

"The Bedford Police Department requests drivers to heed posted speed limits throughout town all year and especially during the summer months on our residential roads and streets when our children are out of school and more likely to be found enjoying the warm weather as pedestrians or bicyclists," said Bedford Police Chief John Bryfonski. "In addition, we also ask drivers to observe posted speed limits along detour routes that will be handling increased volume due to construction during the summer."

The Bedford Police Department’s traffic unit and regular patrols will be on duty along the detour routes monitoring and strictly enforcing speed limits to ensure safety, added the chief, who noted that his department will be posting additional traffic safety patrols funded by state grants to increase traffic safety compliance and visibility.

"Excessive speed is a significant contributing factor to many accidents in Bedford along with distracted driving and failure to adhere to traffic signals.  During the summer months, Bedford PD will be posting additional traffic safety patrols funded by state grants to increase traffic safety compliance and visibility," he said. "Our traffic patrols will be especially vigilant during commuting hours and during weekend travel beginning Friday afternoons when congestion is more prevalent leading to increased collisions often caused by drivers following too close and or distracted driving."

Last month Bedford PD Traffic and Patrol Division personnel issued more than 640 summons and warnings in its continuing effort to ensure the safety of our motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians throughout Bedford.
