Bedford Varsity Wrestlers Stay Undefeated; Beat Concord, 40-36
JV Bulldogs, however, lose to the Crimson Tide, 15-4, at a match in Concord on Wednesday; Coach Schieding talks about the 2022-2023 season.
CONCORD, NH — The Bedford Bulldogs varsity wrestling team came to Concord on Wednesday undefeated, with 12 wins under their belts, including beating Timberlane, historically some of the best wrestlers in New Hampshire, and then, came away with another win.
The Bulldogs beat the Crimson Tide, 40 to 36.
Concord led for most of the night and, at one point, had a 24 to 6 lead. But Bedford clawed back, winning the next three matches and then, four of the next six matches.

With the junior varsity wrestlers, it was a different story. The Crimson Tide dominated the Bulldogs, 15 to 4.
Bedford Head Coach Ryan Schieding, who is in his fourth year, said the season had been going very well with his players wrestling “selflessly, not selfishly” and “buying into the system” or “buying into the team aspect” — something that he said was not an easy thing to do.

“It’s easy in a sport like wrestling to be selfish,” he said. “Maybe I’m winning a match, 8-2, and there are 40 seconds left, I can, just hold on and get my win. But that doesn’t do what’s best for the team. Instead, they go out and try and get the pins for the teams.”
Schieding's toughest wrestlers, too, go out of their way to do the right thing, even to the point of taking on higher weight classes and challenging themselves.
Several teams are having good years in New Hampshire, with a lot of competition. Bedford is now 13-0; Concord is 15-2; Timberlane is 7-1; and Salem is 11-0. Schieding this season has made wrestling in the Granite State interesting again.
“It’s not one team just running away with everything,” he said. “For years, Timberlane just kind of ran away with it. It’s great to see other programs have been doing a good job at building their programs. And now you have, like, five or six teams in the state, that all could all have the potential to win the state championship.”
Schieding said having multiple teams with undefeated seasons or outstanding records means those teams could potentially knock each other off at any time.
“It makes the sport more exciting,” he said.
