Here are the top stories in Bedford today:
- Bedford residents, if you haven't registered for the Bedford Citizens Police Academy, you have until Wednesday, March 16 to sign up. The 10-week citizen's academy is open to all Bedford residents and business owners over the age of 18 and provides and "in-depth look" at the diverse duties that police officers perform every day. Participants will be exposed to almost every aspect of police work from patrol operations and criminal investigations to forensic and crime scene investigations, and more, according to a post on the Bedford Police Facebook page. The academy starts on Thursday, March 24 from 6 -9 p.m. The academy is free, but space is limited. You can sign up and find out more here: (Facebook)
- Seven-year-old Uma and her dad Dan Szczesny have a growing fan following for the unusual rocks in their book, “N.H. Rocks That Rock.” NHPR journalist Rick Ganley met the dad and daughter team at the Head’s Pond Trail parking lot in Hooksett. The guide of 25 rocks that anyone can visit all over New Hampshire is "flying off of local bookstores’ shelves." Dan was homeschooling his then 6-year-old daughter during the pandemic and came up with the idea of finding large rocks on the short nature hikes as a fun outdoor activity. Their research showed there were thousands of rocks in the granite state named after people and things, “Like five billion gazillion,” Uma said. They narrowed it down to 25, and published the amazingly popular book, “NH Rocks That Rock.” You can listen to and read the full story here: (NHPR)
- A shout out to Muriel Sterling of Bedford, New Hampshire, for submitting a household tip that was published in the Union Leader in "Hints From Heloise." If you wondered how you can reuse the plastic sleeves that newspapers sometimes come in, Sterling wrote, in part: "It occurred to me not long ago that they'd be perfect for shoes. So, I now save them instead of recycling, and when I travel, I put my shoes in them before placing in my luggage..." It helps keep clothes clean when packing shoes to travel.
