Here are the top stories today in Bedford:
- A shout out to the Bedford High boys hockey team who won a spot in the finals after a 3-2 victory over the Exeter High boys hockey team Wednesday night at JFK Coliseum. Second-seeded Bedford will play top-seeded Concord in the Division I championship game on Saturday at 5 p.m. at SNHU Arena. You can read more about this story and the Saturday game here (with a subscription): (The Union Leader)
- The New Hampshire House returned to the oldest chamber in the nation after a 2-year absence due to the pandemic. March 2020 was the first time that the 400-member New Hampshire House was not legislating from its chamber since the Civil War. Civility was not always apparent when members voted from different places, including the University of New Hampshire ice arena, from their cars in a parking lot, and they held sessions in both a Bedford sports complex and a hotel expo center in Manchester. House Speaker Sherm Packard called the etiquette of some members outside the chamber “despicable," saying he had to halt business when side conversations drowned out speakers, and at UNH in 2020, some members drank beer inside the arena. The Legislature will finally be meeting in the chamber in "the people's house" of New Hampshire. You can read the full story here: (Greenwich Time)
- Bedford chief of police, John J. Bryfonski, summarized the accomplishments and achievements the Bedford Police Department in the 2021 Annual Report. He said there were "significant challenges" for public safety for Bedford residents, visitors and employees during the pandemic, and that "even Bedford is not immune to the increase in violent crime surging across the county." Crimes in Bedford included a double homicide, an increase in property crime and there was also a plane crash. He added that residents should be comforted to know that extensive "multi-year training programs" supported by Bedford taxpayers paid off and "prepare police officers for the unthinkable."
