Here are the top stories in Bedford today:

  1. The Lobby Bar at the Grand Hotel is selling a few pieces of select furniture to make way for a something new. The Grand Hotel Lobby Bar, that feels like part elegant lodge and part upscale wine bar hideaway, will soon be being reimagined into an Italian Restaurant called Fondi at the Grand Boutique. To make way for the new eatery, select pieces of furniture, like the long couches by the fireplace, are for sale. The Gand noted that any items purchased "must be reserved and paid for in advance," and will only be available for pick-up on Sept. 11 and 12 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Buyers must pay in advance and "provide their own transport and assist" to remove the furniture from the property. You can find out more here: (Bedford Village Inn)
  2. Can you guess which New Hampshire County is the oldest? WOKQ investigated this very question and uncovered some interesting findings. Our very own Bedford was established in 1730 as Narragansett Number 5 for soldiers who fought against the Narragansett Indians in Rhode Island. The name was later changed to Souhegan East until the Town of Bedford was officially established in 1750, according to N.H. Employment Security. WOKQ found that the oldest county in New Hampshire is not a single county, but five counties are tied for the historical title. The oldest counties in the state are Cheshire, Grafton, Hillsborough, Rockingham, Strafford counties, which were all established in 1769. (wokq.com)
  3. The numbers are in—and the hiring market is strong! So if you are looking for a job, or are thinking about finding a new work opportunity, this is a great time. The U.S labor market added 315,000 jobs in August, the "continued bright spot in the economy." Job growth is on a remarkable 20-month streak and is powering the economy. Unemployment is also at a pre-pandemic low. The 20 million jobs that were lost during the pandemic have been recovered. So if you are looking for a job in Bedford and the surrounding area, companies have new positions to fill. (Subscription/The Union Leader)
