Here are the top stories today in Bedford:

  1. A New Hampshire good Samaritan ran out to help a woman driver who crashed into a pole in Nashua and was critically injured when he was struck by another car that sent him to Mass General Hospital in December. David Petrie and another co-worker were trying to help a woman who had just gotten into an accident after hearing the crash at work. He and the co-worker were struck by another vehicle just before first responders arrived. Petrie said his X-ray was "famous" at Mass General due to the extent of his injuries. His body was reassembled with bolts and rods. The 56-year-old is hopeful he will be able to walk again. In response to medical bills the family is facing that are over $1 million, friends have set up a GoFundMe page to help. You can read the full story here: (WMUR)
  2. If you have stopped by a Bedford jewelry store, like Naser Diamonds on River Road, you may have seen sparkling opals among the dazzling selections. An opal gemstone billed as "one of the largest gem-quality opals ever found," sold at an online auction for $125,000 on Sunday. The opal, called the "Americus Australis," weighs more than 11,800 carats, according to the auction house Alaska Premier Auctions & Appraisals. It was kept in a linen closet in a home north of Anchorage until Guy von Brandt said it was time to put it "back out in the world." You can see the "Americus Australis" and read more about this story here: (WMUR)
  3. New Hampshire schools can no longer use fully remote or hybrid learning for future COVID-19 outbreaks, according to new rules adopted by both the Legislature's Joint Committee on Administrative Rules and the State Board of Education. The Friday ruling means that schools are required to provide in-person classes except in cases of inclement weather or when a parent requests remote learning for an individual student. The Senate killed a bill on Thursday hoping to block the rules. You can read the full story here: (NHPR)
