Here are the top 3 stories in Bedford today:

  1. Looking for a new place to rent? You're not alone. Renters in New Hampshire are looking to find affordable places to live, but with few apartments available, they have few options. With rental vacancies at a record low 0.3 percent, state officials are questioning if developer incentives will be enough to meet the demand for affordable housing . A 0.3 percent vacancy rate means that 99.7 percent of apartments are already rented! (Subscription/The Union Leader)
  2. The toxic bacteria bloom advisory for Sebbins Pond in Bedford remains in effect, even though bacteria levels at Crystal Lake in Manchester have dropped "just below" acceptable levels Friday, according to the DES website. The toxin-producing cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) bloom has been spotted at Sebbins Pond as swirls of small green flakes that accumulate at the surface and along the shorelines. "Lake users should avoid contact with the water in areas experiencing cyanobacteria bloom conditions and keep children and pets out," New Hampshire environmental officials wrote. (New Hampshire Dept. of Environmental Services)
  3. A heat advisory has been extended for Bedford through Saturday night at 8 p.m. The heat index is expected to be in the mid to upper 90s, with high humidity. Health officials ask everyone to drink plenty of water and to keep their pets cool. Never leave children or pets in a hot car for any length of time, "as it can be deadly." Health officials also said, "Anyone spending time outside should drink water every 15 minutes," and to take other precautions, like taking frequent breaks inside or in the shade, wearing light clothing, wearing sunglasses, using sunscreen, and limiting exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If anyone is overcome by the heat, they should be moved to a cool location, and immediately call 911.
