Here are the top 3 stories in Bedford today:
- There's a lot of Spirit in the air for Jet Blue! Last week Spirit Airlines agreed to the $3.8 million buyout offer from Jet Blue, which would create the fifth-largest airline in the U.S. The Manchester -Boston regional airport has been advocating for Jet Blue to offer flights at the airport "for more than two decades." Director Ted Kitchens said "it is too early to tell" what impact the merger with have on the airport but noted that Spirit has expanded flights from the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, and "has been happy with its reception here in the Granite State." - If you want to support a worthwhile cause, Bedford's Brian Nolan and John Fitzgerald will be providing urgently needed items to war-torn Ukrainian refugees on August 9. The two Bedford residents have been tirelessly working to help Ukrainian refugees, flying to Poland and driving food, supplies, and greatly-needed items over the border. They have already made two previous humanitarian trips. Ukraine may no longer be in the headlines, but the need is great as the brutal war rages on. They are grateful for donations of any amount, and will directly use the funds for humanitarian relief. You can find out more here: (Bedford4Ukraine)
- New Hampshire is the only New England state that has not legalized recreational marijuana use, as 18 states and Washington, D.C have, but lawmakers in the state opposed legalization over many concerns. Governor Sununu wrote in an email that he has been more progressive than other Governors of the state, noting that he "signed commonsense decriminalization, expanded access to medical marijuana, and provided a pathway to annul old convictions for marijuana possession." Senator Lou D’Allesandro, a Democrat from Manchester, voted against a recent bill to sell recreational marijuana through state-owned liquor stores. “If marijuana is to be legalized, we’ve got to come up with a much better methodology of handling it,” he said.
