Man Stole $500K From 98-Year-Old NH Woman: AG

CONCORD, NH — A Florida man stole nearly $500,000 from a 98-year-old New Hampshire woman, authorities announced Wednesday. Michael Smith, 55, of Avon Park, Florida, was charged with five counts of theft after authorities said he took advantage of the woman "in such ways that impaired her ability to manage her property or financial resources." Smith transferred money into his personal account, wrote unauthorized checks to himself and made multiple purchases and withdrawals totaling $488,000, according to New Hampshire Attorney General Gordon MacDonald.

Smith also tried to steal more than a half-million more from the woman, MacDonald said.

Smith was indicted in Strafford County Superior Court. He faces up to 75 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
