Here are the top stories in Bedford today:

  1. What's better than a performance of "The Music Man?" Max Clayton from Manchester will be performing the lead role on Broadway! Clayton made his New York City debut as Professor Harold Hill on Tuesday night. The actor is filling in for Oscar nominee Hugh Jackman, who tested positive for COVID-19 twice. The Palace Theatre congratulated Clayton on Facebook for his Broadway performance, noting that he was in the theatre’s youth program. New Hampshire proud! (WMUR)
  2. Toxic bacteria blooms have been found in Opechee Lake in Laconia and Silver Lake State Park Beach in Hollis, state officials said. They are warning people to stay out of the toxic water, and to keep pets away from contaminated lakes and ponds. The cyanobacteria advisories come at a time when many Granite Staters "will be cooling off at local lakes and ponds." State officials are asking people to be on the lookout for bacteria blooms in lakes and ponds that "may look like spilled paint." If you suspect a toxic bacteria bloom, send a picture to DES officials. You can read more about this story here: (WMUR)
  3. Gov. Christopher Sununu vetoed a bill on Friday that would change how far landfills can be from bodies of water. The bill would have required companies to keep landfills far enough away from bodies of water so that contaminated groundwater "would take more than five years" to reach them. Governor Sununu said the state’s regulations were already “rigorous and robust.” Bedford has had its own struggles with chemicals seeping into groundwater after toxic PFAS "forever" chemicals closed the drinking wells of several communities. The bill, which had bipartisan support, "was about protecting the Merrimack River, Lake Winnipesaukee, the Atlantic Ocean,” said Tom Tower, who was with the North Country Alliance for Balanced Change.
