Here are the top stories in Bedford today:

  1. A New Hampshire woman with long-term COVID-19 is finally finding the help she needs. Tanya O’Mara was diagnosed with COVID-19 over a year ago and still has lingering symptoms. The Litchfield mother of five and her fiancé, Larry Probst, came down with the virus in November 2020. Her fiancé ended up in the hospital on a ventilator, but O’Mara had a mild case. More than a year later, she has lingering symptoms including nerve pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, and dizziness. After doctors ran tests including a CT scan and spinal scan that came out negative, O’Mara went to the post-acute COVID-19 syndrome clinic at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. The acute COVID-19 syndrome clinic has treated 325 patients with long-term symptoms since they opened last April. O’Mara said, if you have long-term symptoms, "there's help out there." You can read the story here: (WMUR)
  2. The state has endorsed a plan to set PFAS contamination standards in soil. Contamination by PFAS forever chemicals was traced to the Saint Gobain Performance Plastics plant in Merrimack. Residents in Merrimack, Bedford, Litchfield, and Manchester were potentially exposed to the harmful chemicals after contamination was found in groundwater and hundreds of drinking wells. The Environmental Protection Agency says the man-made chemicals can accumulate over time in the environment and in the body creating health risks to humans, as well as fish in contaminated water, and animals that eat plants and berries from contaminated soil that have prompted fishing and hunting warnings. Removing PFAS from the soil "is more complex" said Waste Management Division Director Michael Wimsatt. PFAS chemicals have been used since the 1940s in cookware, food packaging, and used to repel oil and water. Wimsatt told the House Environment and Agriculture Committee there is no magic bullet for treating soil, "and I don’t think we are going to have one any time soon.” You can read more about this story here (if you subscribe): (The Union Leader)
