Here are the top stories today in Bedford:
- A shout out to the Bedford Police department. Officers from Bedford will be participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for N.H. Special Olympics on Friday, June 3. "If you see our officers running, please honk your horn to show your support!" they wrote in a recent Facebook post. If you would like to find out more or support N.H. Special Olympics with a donation, you can visit the website here: (Facebook)
- Judith MacLellan of Bedford offered a helpful tip published in Hints from Heloise in The Union Leader. MacLellan wrote, instead of using plastic vegetable bags in the grocery produce aisle, "No need to use those plastic bags." She noted that reusable mesh bags are "available for corralling your fruits and vegetables while shopping," adding, "I purchased these small reusable bags at my local grocery store and know that they are available at other grocery stores and online. Less use of plastic!" (Subscription / The Union Leader)
- May and June are the peak nesting season for New Hampshire endangered species, including the spotted turtle, and seven other kinds of native New Hampshire turtles. The Piping Plover, a small sea bird nesting on the soft sands of Hampton and Seabrook beaches, is also in danger of extinction. Wildlife officials said that female turtles are especially vulnerable traveling up to a mile from ponds and marshes in the spring to lay their eggs. Piping Plovers, protected by New Hampshire wildlife officials in roped-off areas of beach sand where they are nesting, have chicks that will need protection from beachgoers, dogs, and other dangers in the 30 days after they hatch. If you would like to volunteer to help monitor newborn Piping Plovers, contact Brendan Clifford at 603-271-0463. Read the full story here: (Subscription / The Union Leader)
