Here are the top stories today in Bedford:
- New Hampshire's Mikaela Shiffrin crashed in her third Olympic race. It was her last shot at an individual medal. The crash happened during the women's alpine combined on Thursday in Yanqing, China. She has one more shot at the podium in team slalom competition on Saturday. Shiffrin was expected to make a comeback on Thursday but crashed about 10 gates into her run. It was her third "did not finish" out of five events at the Winter Games. "Why do I keep coming back?" she tweeted on Thursday. She said, "Those first nine turns today were spectacular, really heaven." You can read more here: (NHPR)
- A cooking oil bandit stole used cooking oil from the Puritan Backroom restaurant in Manchester last month. Authorities said the Jan. 23 theft was one of a number of cooking oil thefts from restaurants in Manchester. Why would anyone want to steal used cooking oil? It can be recycled for other uses so restaurants store it until biofuel companies can come to claim it. Authorities said that it can be valuable in large quantities. A man named Phil Perez was arrested and charged for the theft. Authorities also allege he drove a red van with temporary plates that he used to siphon oil from a container at the restaurant. Police are asking anyone who has seen a similar van parked near restaurants in the early morning hours to call them at 603-668-8711 or Manchester Crimeline at 603-624-4040. - As climate change threatens fish and the fishing industry, fishing organizations in New Hampshire are planning for the impact of climate change. On Monday, the East Coast Climate Change Scenario Planning Initiative held the first of three planned webinars to learn about how the ocean is changing with the warming climate. There are a lot of unanswered questions about how the East Coast will experience climate change-related shifts in the ocean, but fishery managers are using the webinar discussions to create scenarios to help them plan for what may happen in the next 20 years.
