Salmonella-Tainted Honey Smacks Sicken 1 In NH

A Honey Smacks salmonella outbreak has sickened at least 73 people in 31 states. Boxes of the cereal should be thrown away, officials said.

CONCORD, NH — A nationwide Honey Smacks salmonella outbreak has reached New Hampshire. One person in the Granite State was sickened in recent weeks, according to the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services. The outbreak has sickened at least 73 in 31 states, federal health officials said. Five were sickened in Massachusetts.

Anyone with Honey Smacks boxes should throw them away or return them to the site of purchase for a refund, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The illnesses happened between March 3 and May 28. No deaths have been attributed to the outbreak.

“Cereal has a long shelf life, so we are advising people to check their shelves and pantries to make sure they do not have any boxes of the recalled product,” said Beth Daly, chief of the NH DHHS Bureau of Infectious Disease Control, in a statement. “Anyone who has Honey Smacks cereal should either throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.”

Salmonella causes diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. The illness lasts for a week and most people recover without treatment. However, the illness can spread to the blood and cause death without antibiotics, officials said.
