Here are the top stories today in Bedford:

  1. Dogs in New Hampshire are becoming seriously ill "very quickly" from the outbreak of an unknown virus, veterinarians warn. Experts do not know the exact cause of the illness, but said that dogs "get very sick, very quickly." Many dogs seem to be getting the illness from other dogs at doggie daycare. Symptoms start with a cough, runny nose, or difficulty breathing, and can rapidly become much more serious. It's not like Kennel Cough, said Dr. Karen Tinkham, owner of Milford Veterinary Hospital. Dogs are getting very sick and coming down with pneumonia, she added. "Many dogs have been hospitalized, and some dogs have even died from it. (WMUR)
  2. If you own a Hyundai or Kia, recalls have been issued for certain models, and the car companies are telling owners "to park outside" as your car may catch on fire. Hyundai and Kia recalled several SUV models, and advised owners to park "outdoors and away from buildings" after several have caught on fire from faulty trailer hitch wiring. The Korean automakers are recalling more than 281,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada with the fire hazard, but acknowledged "they haven't figured out how to fix it yet." There have been 25 reports of "fires or melting incidents" in the U.S. and Canada. No crashes or injuries have been reported. (WMUR)
  3. In other recall news, Ford has recalled more than 2.9 million vehicles at risk of "roll away crashes." The transmission problem covers certain 2013 to 2019 models of the Ford Escape, 2013 to 2018 C-Max, 2013 to 2016 Fusion, 2013 to 2021 Transit Connect, and 2015 to 2018 Edge. Drivers may have shifted the vehicle into Park, but due to a transmission cable problem, it may be in another gear, causing the vehicle to "roll away" when parked. The Ford dealership in Manchester said last week that they now have the parts to repair the recall issue. (US News)
  4. A shout out to Bedford police officer Whitney Mansfield who was honored as Officer of the Quarter. Officer Mansfield conducted several "significant investigations" during the quarter that helped keep Bedford safe. She also made several felony level drug arrests, seized illegal narcotics and equipment, removed illegal weapons from convicted felons through motor vehicle stops and search warrants, and made a significant arrest of a male suspect who had 34 fraudulent checks at a routine traffic stop. Way to go! And, thank you for your good work. (Bedford NH Police Department via Facebook)
