Sign Up for Bedford Summer Reading Programs
Here are five things you should know in Bedford today.

1. Dig into reading. Registration begins today for all summer reading programs at the Bedford Public Library. For more details, visit the library's official website here.
2. The weatherman says ... Today's forecasted high temperature is 74 degrees with a 40-percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms and an overnight low of 57 degrees. The chance of precipitation increases to 90-percent tonight.
3. On this day ... June 10, 1752, the iconic moment of Benjamin Franklin collecting an electrical charge in a Layden jar through his kite being struck by lightening occurred during an early-summer thunderstorm. According to History.com:

Franklin became interested in electricity in the mid-1740s, a time when much was still unknown on the topic, and spent almost a decade conducting electrical experiments. He coined a number of terms used today, including battery, conductor and electrician. He also invented the lightning rod, used to protect buildings and ships.
4. On the agenda. There are no Bedford municipal meetings scheduled for today, but the Parks & Recreation Commission is scheduled to meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the BCTV Bedford Town Meeting Room, and the Bedford Town Council gathers at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the same location.
