Here are the top stories today in Bedford:
- Calling all kids with bikes! Our friends at the Bedford Police department will be having the annual Bike Rodeo on Sunday, May 29, from 9- 11 a.m. for National Police Week. The Bike Rodeo celebrates Bike Safety Month where kids can have fun riding through bicycle safety demonstration courses while learning about bicycle safety. To participate, children must have a parent or guardian present and helmets have to be worn at all times. It's all about fun — but having fun safely! (Bedford Police)
- A shout out to Bedford SNHU graduate Tarah Theis. Tarah, 36, a mom of three, served five years in the United States Marine Corps. Tarah had attempted to go back to schoolman time but had to move often with the military. A few months into her college studies at SNHU, Tarah was diagnosed with breast cancer, and was even more committed to her studies! Through chemotherapy, radiation and surgeries, with the support and encouragement of her advisor and professors, she graduated from SNHU this spring. We celebrate her accomplishment! Way to go Tarah. (SNHU)
- A complex of three brush fires are burning in Crawford Notch State Park. The Park, home to hiking trails, wildlife, waterfalls, and sweeping mountain views, has already lost 106 acres. The three fires, now called the Bemis Fire, were only 25% contained Monday evening. The Alpha fire torched 58 acres and is the largest of the three. The Bravo fire burned 16 acres, while the Charlie fire scorched about 35 acres, officials said. The three fires started around the same time, and have already burned about 106 acres. Adrian Reyes, of the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands, said the fires are located on steep terrain making it difficult to access. The fires would have been much worse if it hadn't rained on the first day, Reyes noted. Firefighters are working to put out the fires before conditions get very dry again. (WMUR)
