Stop & Shop Deal Seekers Brave Long Lines, Thinning Shelves
Hundreds of bargain hunters happy to trade time and convenience for big-time bargains at fated supermarket.
Hundreds of locals residents converged on Stop & Shop in Bedford Friday for deals up to 50-percent off nearly every product in the store.
Saturday morning brought more of the same as there were few shopping carts to be found and even fewer perishable products left on the shelves.
Nearly all the meat, for instance, was gone. And the beer cooler was completely empty - save for a few non-alcoholic products. There was some wine still available, though the selection was quickly thinning.
Yet as local residents waited in checkout lines for roughly 30-40 minutes to take advantage of some of the few remaining deals, most of the shoppers who spoke with Bedford Patch said the prices were well worth the wait.
Stop & Shop announced Tuesday that it is closing all six New Hampshire locations, including the Bedford store at 7 Kilton Road.
Friday, the company confirmed to Patch that it is offering 50-percent off nearly everything in the store:
"Yes, today we began an up to 50-percent-off sale across the stores for most products," said Stop & Shop spokeswoman Suzi Robinson in an email to Patch. "The discount rings automatically at the registers."
She offered the following disclaimer:
Savings not offered on all products including on products where prohibited by law. Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express accepted. Sale is offered on a first come, first served basis and is limited to products in the store; rain checks do not apply. Coupons will be honored, up to the price of the item. Stores closing on or before September 21, 2013. All sales final.
