Here are the top stories today in Bedford:

  1. A strong snowstorm with near blizzard conditions and heavy snow is expected in our area on Saturday. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 14 inches are expected in central, northern, and southern New Hampshire and south central, southwest, and western Maine. Roads will be slippery and travel could be very difficult or impossible, forecasters say. Expected wind gusts up to 35 mph that can create near-blizzard and whiteout conditions. Travel is not recommended. If you have to travel for any reason, keep an extra flashlight, food, blankets, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. You can read more here: (Bedford Patch)
  2. The US Navy is racing to retrieve a $100 million stealth fighter jet that crashed when landing on the deck of a US Navy carrier, plummeting into the depths of the South China Sea. But they aren't the only ones. China would like to retrieve the U.S. F-35 high-tech jet with top-secret technology, with components made by engineers and scientists in New Hampshire. The pilot was injured after ejecting from the plane and six sailors were also injured in the crash. Retrieving the stealth jet is a complex task analyst say, that "will be closely watched" by Beijing. U.S. salvage vessels will take 10 to 15 days to reach the site and up to 120 days to retrieve the plane according to Carl Schuster, a former director of operations at the US Pacific Command's Joint Intelligence Center in Hawaii. 3. Thousands of cats, dogs, and other animals of all ages are waiting for a loving home in nearby shelters. Many of the pets waiting for a forever home are in Bedford. If you are looking for a pet, a great place to begin your search is at Animal Rescue League Of New Hampshire in Bedford, where you will find Smudge the cat patiently waiting. If you aren't sure if you have time to take care of a pet year round there are opportunities to foster pets until they are placed in a home. With help from our friends at Petfinder, Patch has compiled this week's list of nearby animals available for adoption. You can find out more here: (Bedford Patch)
