What Do Blood and Yogurt Have in Common?
Here are five things (and a bonus sixth) you should know today, including rain in the forecast.

1. Give a Pint, Get a Quart. The American Red Cross, Stonyfield and Hannaford officially launched their partnership to help increase the blood supply and raise awareness about the need for blood. During the month of May, all presenting donors at Red Cross blood drives will receive a coupon for a free quart of Stonyfield Organic Yogurt redeemable at any Hannaford location in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Blood is an essential component for patient care in area hospitals, and the only source of blood is a healthy, volunteer blood donor. About every two seconds someone in America needs blood, and one donation can help save up to three lives. To make an appointment to donate blood, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or log on to redcrossblood.org.
2. Mom's Night Out. Bedford High School is sponsoring "Mom's Night Out" on May 8, from 6-8 p.m., in the Bedford High School Commons. A variety of crafts, culinary delights and vendors will be on hand for shopping and an enticing raffle table as well. Shop for Mother's Day or yourself! All vendors' fees and raffle sales will go to benefit the Bedford High School Faculty Scholarship Fund.

6. Victory! On this day ... in 1945, the United States celebrated Victory in Europe Day with ally Great Britain. According to History.com:
The eighth of May spelled the day when German troops throughout Europe finally laid down their arms: In Prague, Germans surrendered to their Soviet antagonists, after the latter had lost more than 8,000 soldiers, and the Germans considerably more; in Copenhagen and Oslo; at Karlshorst, near Berlin; in northern Latvia; on the Channel Island of Sark—the German surrender was realized in a final cease-fire. More surrender documents were signed in Berlin and in eastern Germany.
