📰 News we're reading

1. After zoning board controversy, council tweaks appointment requirements (concordmonitor.com) — Concord city councilors have tightened vetting for first-time appointees to powerful boards like zoning and planning, now requiring a letter of intent alongside applications and resumes. The move follows a rescinded zoning board appointment and aims to encourage better background review while avoiding an overly intrusive process that might discourage residents from serving.

2. Barrett L. Gilchrist (boothbayregister.com) — Concord is mourning Barrett “Barry” Gilchrist, a longtime resident who passed away at 90 and is survived locally by his son-in-law in Concord. A Navy veteran, traveling salesman, devoted family man, and dedicated country club member, he was known for his integrity, love of music, and warm wit. A Celebration of Life is planned for 2026.

3. Calls for Reform After Fatal Domestic Violence Case (concordmonitor.com) — A Concord survivor of intimate partner violence is speaking out as New Hampshire confronts systemic failures exposed by a Berlin domestic homicide. Her experience with a strangulation case and bail release underscores why advocates are pushing for tougher protections, better court data-sharing, and faster firearm surrender for abusers. Lawmakers will debate several reform bills in the coming legislative session.

4. 2025 Capital Area Holiday Basketball Tournament Starts (concordmonitor.com) — Concord’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams both fell to Hopkinton in Saturday’s opening day of the Capital Area Holiday Tournament, despite strong efforts from several Concord players. Twelve area teams are competing, with defending champions Bow girls and Pembroke boys entering play on Sunday as the tournament continues nearby.
