CONCORD, NH — State environmental officials are warning of potential pollutant air quality issues for sensitive people in New Hampshire on the Seacoast this weekend.

In an alert Friday, the New Hampshire of Environmental Services said a “health warning” was being issued for coastal Rockingham County on Saturday and Sunday due to ozone and smog issues and the very hot weather conditions in the state. The alert warns of “particle pollution” that could harm “people with heart or lung disease” and “older adults,” while children should “reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.” Interior Rockingham County as well as Strafford and Hillsborough counties, have “moderate warnings,” while the rest of the state is labeled “good.”

Some of New Hampshire’s more mountainous areas — anywhere with elevations that are more than 3,000 feet in Carroll, Coos, and Grafton counties are also in the moderate category.

“Sensitive individuals should limit prolonged exertion,” the alert said, specifically focused on coastal Rockingham County. “Sensitive individuals include children and older adults, anyone with lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis, and people who are active outdoors.”

The alert stated even healthy individuals “may experience mild health effects and should consider limiting strenuous or prolonged activities.”
