Hampton Thinks It Has Fix for Trash Service on Snowy Days

A little over a week after town officials reported many residents had complained about refuse collection during storm events, Hampton has again modified its curbside program.

Town Manager Fred Welch said the town is now "completely abandoning the idea" that trash and recycling service will be canceled on any given day that the Hampton School District cancels classes.

That traditionally has been a "trigger," according to Welch, for whether Hampton employees would be sent out on their morning collection routes. The system hasn't be working lately, though, as back-to-back snowstorms and cancellation days have caused backups, delays and the inability to collect some homeowners' garbage.

"Trash pickup has been somewhat of an issue lately," said Welch.

Dick Nichols, the chairman of the Hampton Board of Selectmen, and Welch said that the town likely could've completed all of its make-up routes and avoided the trash collection issues had service not been canceled on Jan. 2.

Still, selectmen and town officials have said residents should expect plowing and road maintenance efforts to take priority over trash collection during winter storm events.

Welch also again urged residents to register for Hampton’s automated e-mail and voicemail messaging system, which sends out alerts regarding service delays, office closures and other non-emergency changes in the event of an issue or storm event.
