'Smiling' Drunk Driver Who Hit Beach Pedestrian Sentenced

A Massachusetts woman who "seriously" injured a Hampton Beach pedestrian while driving drunk early one morning in summer 2012 has been sentenced to 6 1/2 years in state prison.

Michelle Nogueira Rodrigues, 23, of Ipswich, Mass., was sentenced in Rockingham Superior Court on Jan. 3 following a Dec. 4 guilty plea to one felony count of aggravated driving while intoxicated.

Court staff said Rodrigues was also ordered to pay restitution to her victim, Katheryn Marcou, in addition to completing 12 months of alcohol treatment. Rodrigues will lose her license for the next 24 months as part of the plea deal.

The crash occurred at about 1:35 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012, near 101 Ocean Blvd.

Marcou suffered a pelvic fracture as a result of the crash.
