Here are the top three stories today in Manchester:
- An 18-year-old was shot late Sunday night by a Manchester police officer. At about 11:30 p.m., teenager Waleed Al Thuwayni was caught doing burnouts and driving recklessly in a Nissan convertible downtown on 261 Maple St. Manchester police said the officer opened fire after Al Thuwayni pulled out what appeared to be a black pistol; it turned out to be a BB gun designed to look like a real handgun. Al Thuwayni was taken to Elliott Hospital for gunshot wounds in stable condition and was arrested on charges of reckless conduct, criminal threatening, and disobeying an officer. (NBC Boston)
- A Manchester man was sentenced to 14 and a half years by the U.S. District Court in Portland, Maine, on conspiracy, robbery, and firearm charges. The charges stem from a 2019 violent home invasion in York, Maine, where Jason Candelario of Manchester and three others planned a home invasion with the intent to rob marijuana and marijuana sale proceeds. When the resident arrived home, a violent altercation ensued and the victim was shot. Candelario pleaded guilty on Nov. 2 and was sentenced to 175 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. (United States Attorney's Office)
- This year's Saint Patrick's Day parade was dedicated to Manchester’s Ukrainian community. On Sunday afternoon, Ukrainian families were greeted with cheers and a banner through downtown Manchester on Elm St. A city tradition since 1995, the parade included unicyclists, marching bands, and bagpipes.
