The Patriots Pen competition provides middle school students with the opportunity to speak

keep offering it to America’s young people.”
The Patriot’s Pen is an essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history,
along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word
essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-
Chief. This year’s theme is “My Voice in America’s Democracy”.
Over 750 New Hampshire students participated in the competition this year. As one of 53
finalists worldwide, (Student Name) will compete at the national level for the first-place prize of
a $5,000 college scholarship.
The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) started the Patriots Pen Scholarship program
in 1947. The VFW became a national sponsor in the late 1950s and assumed sole
responsibility for the program in 1961. The competition was created to provide students grades
6-8 the opportunity to express themselves in regard to democratic ideas and principles.
Around 68,800 students participate in the competition each year and VFW awards more than
$1million in scholarships every year.
