Murray takes 5th title at NHWAY State Wrestling Championships

Bow, NH (February 11, 2024) - The New Hampshire Wrestling Association for Youth (NHWAY) hosted its annual State Championship Tournament on Sunday, February 11th at Bow High School. 193 wrestlers ages 5-to-10 years old competed for individual State titles in 29 weight classes split into 3 competition divisions; age 6 years and under (6U), age 8 years and under (8U), and age 10 years and under (10U). Competitors came from clubs and youth programs around the State. The tournament also featured a team competition for each competition division.

29 State Champions were crowned. Brody Murray (Salem Bulldogs) stepped into rarefied air with his 10U, 72 lb championship becoming only the 4th wrestler in NHWAY history to score a 5th State title. Wrestlers capturing their third individual state titles included Roy McHenry (Empire Wrestling Club), Matthew Ely (Agoge Wrestling Club), and Andrew Kalil (Salem Bulldogs). Two-time champions included 10U wrestlers Maeve Fernald (Smitty’s Barn), Joey Algeo (Litchfield Youth), and Michael Lobberecht (Salem Bulldogs); and 8U wrestlers Bradley Cameron (Derry Rebels), Jaxon Beckman (Smitty's Barn), and Landon Mustapha (Salem Bulldogs).

The competition drew the best youth wrestlers from across the state filling brackets ranging from 43 to 125 pounds. The turnout represented a 36% increase in participation over last year’s tournament. Wrestlers competed in double elimination and round-robin brackets with 11 brackets containing 8 or more wrestlers. The largest bracket was the 8U, 56 lb bracket which had 16 wrestlers followed closely by 8U, 48 lbs which had 15. Awards were presented to the top 6 placers in each weight class with the top 5 finishers in 8U and 10U brackets also qualifying to compete at the Youth New England Championships taking place in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, March 15-17th.

Wrestlers also accumulated team points with their performance to decide team champions for each division. Smitty’s Barn captured the 6U team trophy while the Salem Bulldogs swept both 8U and 10U team competitions. Complete team and individual placement results were as follows.
