Bagel Alley: Good Eats, But Bring Your Cash

I needed lunch, and wasn't sure where to go, so I enlisted the help of our faithful Nashua Patch Facebook followers.

Tricia Adams was first to respond, and sent me to Bagel Alley. Good call, with one caveat, which I will get to in a minute.

I can't tell you the last time i entered a bagel shop -- I blame the carb detractors of the 1990s, who made me feel ashamed of my lifelong love affair with starch.

What I quickly discovered is that a veggie and hummus melt on a health bagel is a great guilt-free lunch option.

Also on the plus side: ample booth seating, wide menu variety, whimsical bagel-heavy decor and giant cookies.

My one critique would be that they don't accept credit/debit cards. I respect that, but rarely have more than a handful of pennies on me at any given time.

The woman behind the counter, sensing my shock and cashless embarrassment, mentioned that a check would be OK, so I dug through my bag, found an old check book, dusted it off and paid for my lunch with a bank note for $7.67.

I searched the menu board and heavily decorated walls -- and even the door, on my way out, but never found a sign stating that my plastic was not accepted there.

That would help, and if it already exists, it needs to be more prominently featured. Just my two cents.

Anyway, thanks to Tricia, I am over my aversion to bagel shops, and have a new happy place where I can find comfort in delicious fresh baked carbs.

This was so much fun, I think I will make "Think for me Thursday" a recurring feature.
