Lenny and Nancy Abreu are having a great time as they work toward the grand opening of Nancy's Diner, a retro '50s-themed eatery at 25 Canal Street.
They've made great progress this week, fine-tuning the front counter and installing kitchen appliances.
Despite the valiant team effort, they're pushing back the date one more week.
Abreu said they are ready "in their hearts" but the plumbing is another matter.
"The plumber's actually here now," said Abreu, above the din of various work crews inside the diner.
He showed off the tables his wife has been laboring over.
"She's been going around collecting old newspaper ads from the 1950s, and putting them on the table tops," Abreu said, pointing to two tables in progress. "It's pretty neat."
Originally the target for the grand opening was July 1, then July 8, now, it's looking like July 15.
"We want it to be right, and some of it is out of our hands, but we're here working every day. We can't wait," Abreu said.
