Investigation Into Nashua's Sullivan Park Shooting Leads To Arrest

Alexander Rivera Aponte was arrested after cops investigated a shooting that left him with a gunshot wound to the leg in August 2024.

NASHUA, NH — Nashua Police have arrested a 42-year-old man from Nashua in connection to an August shooting investigation.

The Nashua Police Department responded to the area of Sullivan Park for the report of gunshots in the area of the park on Aug. 21, 2024. When officers arrived, they located Alexander Rivera Aponte, 42, of Nashua, in the park, who was suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. Aponte received medical attention for his injuries.

Officers were able to speak with other witnesses and people involved in a physical altercation that led to Aponte being shot. Detectives within the Special Investigations Division were assigned to further the investigation. During the investigation, detectives learned that Aponte and a woman known to him had made plans to confront and fight a group of juveniles at Sullivan Park.

During the physical altercation in the park, at least two separate guns were fired. Court documents show the woman with Aponte had a firearm, as well as one of the juveniles. It is unclear in the court paperwork who fired the gun that injured Aponte. However, two firearms fired a total of nine bullets, according to police.

Aponte was charged with felony riot and violation of a protective order after police discovered Aponte had an active restraining order against him from the woman who was with him confronting the juveniles in the park. At the time of Aponte's arrest, he had an outstanding drug-related warrant for possession of a controlled drug subsequent offense issued by the Nashua Police Department, according to NPD Sgt John Cinelli.

Aponte was held without bail pending his arraignment at the 9th Circuit-District Division-Nashua Court on Monday at 1 p.m.
