Nashua Firefighters Work Several Hours To Extinguish Compactor Fire

Nashua Fire Rescue responded to alarms sounding at retailer Savers and found the fire. Watch a video of firefighters working at the scene.

NASHUA, NH — Nashua Fire Rescue responded to Savers on Daniel Webster Highway Thursday for a fire alarm activation.

When firefighters arrived, they heard alarms and light smoke inside the store. As they investigated, they located a fire in a compactor outside that had a chute to load from inside the store. Firefighters needed access to the compactor and contacted “Cram-A-Lot,” the company that services it. They were advised with travel time, no one from the company could be on the scene for a few hours.

It was decided to use straps and chains attached to the NFR Special Hazards unit to attempt to pull the compactor away from the loading chute.

While firefighters worked on moving the compactor, a steady stream of smoke continued from the burning materials. As it was pulled away, a crew prevented the compactor from rolling too fast due to an incline.

Once the compactor was moved, crews worked to pry the door open and began removing burning materials. The materials were pulled onto the ground using hooks, and firefighters used water to extinguish the fire.

The store remained open, and Nashua Fire remained at the scene for several hours.
