Bernie Sanders for President? The mere mention had ears up here in First-in-the-Nation New Hampshire. When well-known (or well-heeled) U.S. senators and congressmen visit the Live Free Or Die state, there is often a cursory mention of whether or not they have White House hopes.
But Bernie Sanders, the "democratic socialist senator" from Vermont, is not someone out of central casting. Nevertheless, he's got steely reserve and a straight-talking manner, and, as he tells the press, he is seriously considering running for president in 2016.
As former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean proved, a smart campaign and a strong message can take one very far in national politics.
