Many Busted for DWI, Drugs After Flurry of Crime Early Sunday

Salem Police had their hands full during a 36-minute period early Sunday morning, as numerous drug and driving while intoxicated arrests contributed to a busy shift that also included a road closure after a drunk driver downed a utility pole.

Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patten said numerous individuals in total were taken into custody between 12:10 a.m. and 12:46 a.m. Sunday.

Jeffrey Perry, 42, of Salem, was charged with possession of marijuana and transportation of a controlled drug following a traffic stop on Lawrence Road at 12:10 a.m. Sunday.

An accident on Cluff Crossing Road at 12:25 a.m. led to the arrest of Sonny Santana, 31, of Salem, driving while intoxicated and possession of heroin charges.

Police received a report about a suspicious vehicle on Lou Avenue, and officers who responded to the area charged Alexander Arthur, 18, of Salem, with unlawful possession of an alcohol beverage and placed Elie Kanaan, 17, and Jordan Bowman, 17, both of Salem, into protective custody.

The final incident in the 36-minute window came at 12:46 a.m., when a car operated by Brian Jones, 46, of Salem, slammed into a utility pole on Kelly Road. The road was closed for four to six hours due to the downed pole, and Jones was charged with driving while intoxicated.
