30-Foot Humpback Whale Corpse Washes Up On NJ Beach: Report

The body of a massive humpback whale washed up on a New Jersey beach Saturday, according to a news report.

JERSEY SHORE - The body of a massive humpback whale washed up on a New Jersey beach Saturday, prompting an impromptu beach burial the next day, according to an NJ.com report.

The Marine Mammal Stranding Center of Brigantine responded to the 20-ton beached animal near Whale Beach in Strathmere, the publication said.

A representative from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center told NJ.com the juvenile whale, believed to be under 10 years old, was too harshly decomposed to be able to deduce a cause of death.

Members from the organization buried the whale on the beach on Sunday, the publication added.

The news comes just days after an infant sperm whale washed up on a beach in Keansburg, according to the Asbury Park Press. The younger whale’s cause of death also hasn't been determined, though experts say it could’ve become separated from its mother while nursing and died of hunger.

A Patch request for comment from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center was not immediately returned.
