Elderly Man Assaulted, Knocked Unconscious While Getting Mail In Manahawkin: Police

George Rutz, 50, was charged with aggravated assault after he confronted and assaulted an 81-year-old who was getting his mail, cops said.

MANAHAWKIN, NJ — A Manahawkin man was charged with aggravated assault after attacking an 81-year-old man and knocking him unconscious, Stafford police said.

Shortly before 5 p.m. on May 15, the elderly man, who is also a Manahawkin resident, arrived at a Compass Court home to get mail, police said.

George Rutz, a 50-year-old resident of Compass Court, confronted the man and subsequently assaulted him, police said. Authorities did not give a motive for the assault.

The older man suffered a head injury and lost consciousness, police said. He was taken to the Atlantic City Trauma Center for treatment; an update on his condition was not immediately available.

Rutz was taken into custody and charged with second-degree aggravated assault. He was transported to Ocean County Jail where he is awaiting a hearing in superior court.
