Last Public Meeting On Oyster Creek Safety To Be Held Tonight

The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission will meet from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Manahawkin tonight to discuss the plant's safety in 2017.

MANAHAWKIN, NJ - The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold an open house tonight at the Holiday Inn here on Route 72 to discuss the 2017 safety performance of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station.

This will likely be the last public meeting on the plant's safety. The NRC and Lacey officials were taken by surprise when Exelon, the plant's owner, said the plant would close in October 2018, more than a year ahead of schedule.The plant was slated to cease operations by December 2019, as part of an agreement with the state.

The following NRC officials will attend the meeting:
Matthew R. Young - Chief, Division of Reactor Projects, Branch 6
Raymond J. Powell - Chief, Decommissioning Branch,
Bruce Watson, Chief, Reactor Decommissioning Branch

The plant's resident inspectors will also attend.

Signs, banners, posters and displays affixed to any sticks, poles or other similar devices
will not be permitted in the meeting room, according to the NRC.

Oyster Creek is the oldest nuclear plant in the United States. It went online in December of 1969.
