Basking Ridge Native, Rutgers Punter Nominated for National Collegiate Award

One of Rutgers University’s Scarlet Knights football players has a chance to be named among the best players in the nation.

Joey Roth, of Basking Ridge, has been nominated for the Ray Guy Award, which honors the best punter in all of college football each season.

Roth is averaging 40.6 yards on 31 punts in seven starts with a season-long of 54 yards against Washington State.

The Ray Guy list will be narrowed down to 10 semifinalists on Nov. 13. That list will be voted on by sports information directors, coaches, media and previous award winners.

The winner will be announced on ESPN during the Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 10.

Roth is a 6-foot, 180-pound senior and is studying labor studies and employment relations at the school. He was a two-year starting punter at Ridge High School.
