BASKING RIDGE, NJ—The Bernards Township Committee on Tuesday evening approved the formation of two new committees in town.

The Diversity and Inclusion Committee will meet once per month and will be charged with creating an atmosphere of acceptance in the township. The new panel, selected by the town committee, will consist of 11 members and will be chaired by a member of the town committee.

It will also consist of representatives from the Bernards Police Department, local school administration, local religious groups, and a representative with significant training, experience and knowledge of diversity and inclusion.

"I think all of us as humans have biases," said committeeperson Joan Bannan Harris, "and they should be examined when creating a diversity and inclusion committee."

According to the township, qualifications to serve on the committee include an open mind, a sense of community, and good will toward others.

The Diversity and Inclusion Committee will advise the township twice annually on any opportunities to promote and build harmony among township residents, to advise on ways to promote good will, cooperation, unity among residents, and to recommend educational and cultural programs that foster unity.

"It's a good place to start," said Bernards Mayor James Baldassare, "it's never going to please everyone 100 percent. There's always room for improvement and I'm going to trust this committee and those that serve on it."
