Officials Sworn In, Basking Ridge Resident Fired as Jets GM Top News

After being sworn into the a second term on the Bernards Township Committee, Carolyn Gaziano was appointed the township mayor for 2013. In her New Year's speech, she talked about plans for furthering emergency readiness, but also said she will keep focused on keeping municipal spending down. Township Committeeman John Carpenter also was selected as this year's deputy mayor, and John Malay, who had campaigned with Gaziano in 2012, was sworn into a fourth three-year term on the all-Republican Township Committee.

Construction to Close Mount Airy Road Just North of W. Oak St. Starting Around Monday
One of the main routes between Basking Ridge and Bernardsville will be closed to all but local traffic starting around Jan. 7 for the replacement of an old water main — the first phase of Somerset County's planned major renovation of a portion of Mount Airy Road that will continue later this year or early in 2014.

Farmstead Arts Looks Forward to More Events in 2013, Completion of Much of Barn Restoration
Bernards Township's own historic and arts center has been quiet since Hurricane Sandy, but the Farmstead Arts is planning more shows and events starting around February — and a rubber ducky race next June. Meanwhile, a significant project to restore the historic English barn on the property is nearing completion.
Unbeaten Ridge Hockey Wins Holiday Tournament
The boys on ice have been hot, hot, hot as Ridge High School Red Devils hockey beat Bridgewater-Raritan High School on New Year's Eve day to capture the Bridgewater Sports Complex Holiday Tournament Championship. Undefeated Ridge had a slow start but came back from a 2-1 deficit to score three unanswered goals in the third period to win the game.

Undefeated Ridge Basketball Wins Holiday Sepanak Tournament
The Ridge High School boys basketball team was holding onto an undefeated season (4-0) by the time the team reached the final game of the Len Sepanak Holiday Tournament last weekend against Sayreville. Ridge dominated the game in scoring and ended up with a decisive 76-56 victory.
Sandy Assistance Deadline Extended
For those who haven't pulled their information together, or who have been sitting on the fence whether to apply for federal aid for Sandy damage, the deadline has been extended until Jan. 31 to file an application with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
