Pleasant Valley Mid-size Pool Resurfacing Cost Under Budget

Bernards Township awards contract to Dover company to complete job before summer; memberships still available.

Bernards Township officials were expecting to tap the Pleasant Valley pool account before the season opens on Memorial Day, but a contract awarded by the Township Committee came in for less than that.

Ray Palmer Associates was last week hired for $58,400 to replaster the training pool, with the goal of completing the job before the municipal pool complex is due to open on Memorial Day weekend, May 25.

The pool requiring a new surface is one used primarily for swim lessons, Township Administrator Bruce McArthur said earlier.

As of Jan. 1, Pleasant Valley Pool is debt free, and in fact has a surplus built up to be spent on the facility, and keep it financially self-sufficient, McArthur said.

McArthur said an analysis of the finances for the pool account — which is expected to operate without taxpayer contribution — showed a $200,000 surplus for this year. Even after paying for the resurfacing project, the account still will have about $140,000 banked, he said.

Memberships still available, renewals due by March 29

This year's pool season is scheduled to run between May 25 and Sept. 2, Labor Day, according to information on the Bernards Township website.

As of Friday, the township Parks and Recreation Department has confirmed that memberships still are available.

In order to guarantee membership for the 2013 season, pool members who had signed up in previousyears are asked to submit renewal payments by March 29. All renewal payments received after March 29 will be accepted on a space available basis, the website said.

The township website said that memberships are available for Bernards Township residents only.

Membership applications are available online. A one-time $400 initiation fee is required for new family and two-person household members, and $200 for single members. The family membership cost for those members who are renewing is $475.

Membership payments may be made online, by mail to Pool Membership, 1 Collyer Lane, Basking Ridge, 07920; or in person at the recreation department at 1 Collyer Lane, Basking Ridge.
