Somerset County Resumes In-Person Passport Services

Applications and renewals are by appointment only

SOMERVILLE, NJ – Residents of Somerset County can now apply for and renew passports in person after scheduling an appointment at the county clerk’s office in Somerville. The clerk’s office noted a large backlog of applications at the State Department due to the pandemic, making it necessary to resume in-person services.

“We urge anyone who is planning to travel out of the country early next year and needs a new or renewed passport to take advantage of this opportunity to apply,” said a statement by Somerset County Clerk Steve Peter. “Getting a passport could take significantly longer than in the past.”

The clerk’s office has a list of restrictions and safety measures it is taking, beginning with allowing only one applicant or household in the building at a time. Applicants will also be required to undergo a temperature check, wear a mask, and practice social distancing while in the building. To book the required appointment, email passports@co.somerset.nj.us or call 908-231-7008. Appointments are scheduled in one-hour time slots, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Only one household allowed per appointment. Before arriving at the building, the clerk's office recommends reading their website to see which documents you need to bring and which family members need to be present.

The Somerset County Clerk’s office only accepts checks and money orders. You will need a separate check or money order for fees payable to the U.S. Department of State and the Somerset County Clerk. The Clerk’s office will notify applicants of the exact charge during the registration process for those who pay with a money order. Applicants should use the Grove Street entrance to the county Administration Building (on-street, metered parking is available nearby).
