Nutley Jaycees Announce 2013 Distinguished Service Award Winners

The Nutey Jaycees have singled out five residents for their contributions to the township: John H. Walker Middle School's Joseph Cappello,  Nutley Board of Education Vice President Victoria Flynn, Fire Chief Philip Nicolette, former teacher and longtime volunteer Teri Ruffo and  Nutley jeweler Sanford Fleitell. 

Belleville Middle School Students Recognized for 'Changing Hunger'

The Belleville Town Council recently recognized Belleville Middle School students for placing second in their District in a statewide canned food drive. Students collected over 1,800 cans of food for the local food pantry at St. Peter’s Church. The can drive was organized by the Builder’s Club of Belleville Middle School and sponsored by the local chapter of Kiwanis.

Students Test Middle School For Bacteria

Belleville Middle School's eighth grade  science classes recently studied where bacteria grows in the environment. The science teachers prepared petri dishes filled with gelatinous agar for each class. Using inoculating swabs, students surveyed different locations in the building and recorded their findings on bacterial growth.  Students were able to estimate population sizes by also making sample counts. 

Nutley Board Aims to Trim Town Budget Tax Increase

The Nutley Board of Commissioners aim to slash the 2013 municipal budget by at least $180,000 and trim at least $1 million from capital improvement spending. Spending cuts are needed to meet the state-mandated deadline and to reduce the budget to less than a 2 percent increase, according to Commissioner Thomas Evans, director of the Department of Revenue and Finance.

Can Belleville Board Trim School Tax Bill?

Belleville Board of Education members are meeting twice to try and prevent a tax increase before the public hearing March 25 on the 63.5 million school district budget for the 2013-14 academic year.
