7 DWI Arrests Made In Berkeley Last Month: Police Blotter

BERKELEY, NJ — Released by Berkeley police and unedited by Patch, all of last month's crimes and arrests.

On July 3, Patrolman Ryan Wahl and Sgt. Michael Connell responded to a motor vehicle accident near the area of Mizzen Ave. The driver of the vehicle Heather Clarey 42, of Bayville, hit a utility pole. No injuries were reported. Upon further investigation it was determined that Clarey was driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. Clarey was arrested and transported to police headquarters where she was processed and charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Reckless Driving, Careless Driving, and Disregard of Marked Lane. Clarey’s vehicle was impounded in accordance with John’s Law. Clarey was released pending a future court date.

On July 4, Patrolman Jacob Camarazza and Patrolman Robert Kennedy responded to the area of Cypress Dr. for a report of stolen property. The homeowner reported two subjects removed a bike from his property. Upon further investigation it was determined that Jessica Peters 32, of Bayville, and Jesse Gibson 34, of Bayville, stole the bike from the property. Peters and Gibson where arrested and transported to police headquarters where they were processed and charged. Gibson was charged with Theft by Unlawful Taking and Criminal Trespass. Peters was charged with Criminal Trespass. Both Gibson and Peters where released pending a future court date.

On July 11, Patrolman Sean Varady responded to the area of Red Bank Ave. for a report of a male sleeping behind the wheel. Upon arrival, a 2008 Toyota was stopped at the stop sign at the intersection. The driver of the vehicle, Charles Lefevre 41, of Waretown, was in the driver’s seat with his eyes closed, slumped over and the transmission in drive. Lefevre was unaware of any police presence. Traffic was building up behind Lefevre’s vehicle. Patrolman Varady was able to put the vehicle into park. At this point Lefevre awoke and was unaware that he was driving. Upon further investigation it was determined that Lefevre was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. Lefevre was also in possession of CDS and drug paraphernalia. Lefevre was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters where he was processed and charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Possession of CDS, Possession of Hypodermic Needle, Possession of Paraphernalia, CDS in Motor Vehicle and Reckless Driving. Lefevre’s vehicle was impounded in accordance with John’s Law. Lefevre was released pending a future court date.

On July 18, Patrolman Sean Varady and Patrolman Drew Fanara responded to 220 Rt.9 (Wawa) for a report of a driver a sleep behind the wheel at the gas pump. The driver of the vehicle, Joseph Scaramuzzini 60, of Bayville, was found to be slumped over the wheel nodding in and out. Scaramuzzini was unaware that he was nodding out and was unsure of his surroundings. Upon further investigation it was determined that Scaramuzzini was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. Scaramuzzini was transported to police headquarters where he was processed and charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Refusal to Submit to Breath Sample, Refusal to Submit Chemical Testing and Reckless Driving. Scaramuzzini’s vehicle was impounded in accordance with John’s Law. Scaramuzzini was released pending a future court date.

On July 19, Patrolman Sean Varady and Officer Michael Solomone responded to the area of Brooks Ave. for several reports of motor vehicle burglaries. Detective Michael Riccardelli and Detective William Somers responded to assist with the investigation. Upon arrival, contact was made with the victim’s whose vehicles were entered during the previous night. Approximately 8 cars were broken into in the area. The vehicles were left unlocked. Video footage of the area was obtained which revealed a possible suspect. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Detective Riccardelli at (732) 341-1132 Ext. 2136 or Detective Somers at (732) 341-1132 Ext. 2111. All information will remain anonymous. These incidents remain under investigation.

On July 22, Patrolman Shawn Lightbody responded to a vehicle stopped in the roadway near the area of Rt.9. It appeared that the silver Buick, driven by Eric Pierce 23, of Toms River, had a front blown out tire. Both the vehicles front air bags were deployed and extensive front end damage was visible. At this time Sgt. Will Cullen, Patrolman Michael Drybola and Patrolman Sean Varady arrived on scene. Upon further investigation it was determined that Pierce was under the influence of a controlled dangerous subject. Pierce was transported to police headquarters where he was processed and charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Reckless Driving. Pierce’s vehicle was impounded in accordance with John’s Law. Pierce was released pending a future court date.

On July 25, Patrolman Robert Murawski and Sgt. Michael Tanis responded to a stopped motor vehicle near the area of Korman Rd. and Ocean Gate Drive. The driver of the vehicle, Jason Roach 40, of Bayville was a sleep behind the wheel. Roach was unaware of any police presence and was difficult to wake. Upon further investigation it was determined that Roach was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. Roach was transported to police headquarters where he was processed and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. Roach’s vehicle was impounded in accordance with John’s Law. Roach was released pending a future court date.

On July 25, Patrolman Michael Bulwinski responded to the area of Brennan Concourse for a report of a vehicle in the woods. Upon arrival it was determined that a vehicle had ran off into the woods and struck a tree. The driver, Christopher Baiocco 50, of Toms River, was uninjured. Upon further investigation it was determined that Baiocco was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. Baiocco was transported to police headquarters where he was processed and charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Reckless Driving, Careless Driving and Failure to Stop or Yield. Baiocco’s vehicle was impounded in accordance with John’s Law. Baiocco was released pending a future court date.

On July 28, Patrolman Drew Fanara responded to a motor vehicle accident near the area of Madras Ct. Upon arrival, it was determined that vehicle 1 had backed up into another parked vehicle at a high rate of speed. Upon further investigation, the driver of vehicle 1, Maryann Wiewiorski 60, of Berkeley Township, was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. Wiewiorski was transported to police headquarters where she was processed and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. Wiewiorski’s vehicle was impounded in accordance with John’s Law. Wiewiorski was released pending a future court date.
