BERKELEY, NJ — Without community leaders, Berkeley Township wouldn’t hum along nearly as smoothly as it does. We’d miss their contributions in big and small ways.

Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to recognize these often unsung community leaders and celebrate their contributions.

This submission comes from Gary DeRosa, a Berkeley Township reader who nominated Carmen Amato.

Why do you believe the community leader should be recognized or honored?

He has taking a Township that was in the red 12 years ago, of over a million dollars and built it into a 12 million $ surplus. They are the second lowest real estate tax in the county. He has taking a community with both children and seniors in mind, and built it into a safe, family environment. He was the first one I believe in the county to secure our schools for children safety. He's also provided full-time staff of Emergency Services for our seniors. During Sandy he worked close with County, State and Federal agencies to rebuild a devastated town into a beautiful community for all. He has created an open door policy for all Township people to communicate with his office. At night time and during the day you will see our parks full of people fully engaged in activities. He has open the door for both female and male Athletics Sports. Carmen Amato has built a Futuristic, Forward Thinking Community Township for all. Because he's been so successful in managing our town, that the state has reduced the amount of Education money to our school system. They are fighting hard in Trenton to get their lost money back. These are just a few of the issues I have touched on that propels Carmen Amato as the best community leader in the state of New Jersey. Someday I hope to see him as Governor or US Senator.
