Berkeley 2021 Election: GOP Sweeps Council; BOE Results

Republican incumbents won new terms on Berkeley Township Council, according to unofficial election results.

BERKELEY, NJ — Republican incumbents held on to their seats in Berkeley Township, according to unofficial election results from the Ocean County Clerk's Office.

Four council seats were up for grabs this election. Republicans James Byrnes, Angelo Guadagno, Michael Signorile and Sophia Gingrich ran against Democrats Alexis Loftus, Patrick O'Keefe, Andrew Prudente and Thomas White Jr.

Here are the unofficial results, according to the Ocean County Board of Elections. The results do not become official until the election board certifies them, usually later in November.

Berkeley Township Council

1st Ward:

  • James Byrnes (R) - 2,796
  • Alexis Loftus (D) - 849

2nd Ward:

  • Angelo Guadagno (R) - 2,663
  • Patrick O'Keefe (D) - 962

3rd Ward:

  • Michael Signorile (R) - 3,598
  • Andrew Prudente (D) - 1,488

4th Ward:

  • Sophia Gingrich (R) - 3,490
  • Thomas White Jr (D) - 1,595

In the Central Regional Board of Education race, newcomers Merissa Borawski and Heather Koenig unseated incumbents Al Aires and George Dohn. Incumbent Edward F. Cammarato sought a one-year unexpired term.

In the Berkeley Township School District, incumbents Douglas Bowens, Anne Marie Trethaway, John MacMoyle and James P. Coffey are the only candidates that filed to retain the four open school board seats.

Berkeley Board of Education

three 3-year terms:

  • Douglas Bowens - 8,258
  • Anne Marie Trethaway - 8,365
  • John MacMoyle - 7,801

one-year unexpired term:

  • James P. Coffey - 8,790

Central Regional Board of Education

two 3-year terms

  • Merissa Borawski - 6,165
  • Heather Koenig - 5,929
  • Al Aires - 4,316
  • George Dohn - 3,901

one-year unexpired term:

  • Edward F. Cammarato - 8,609
