Blood Donations Needed Now More Than Ever In Summer

American Red Cross urging Ocean County residents to donate blood during summer, when donations usually drop off.

OCEAN COUNTY, NJ - Summer is typically not a good time for the American Red Cross.

Donations drop sharply after Memorial Day, when summer schedules, vacations and school breaks lead to a decline in donations.

"Accidents and medical emergencies don’t take a summer break," a release from the organization said. "Patients need blood every minute, every day."

Just ask Ramona Johnson. She was 10 years old in the summer of 1973. She fell off some swings and began bleeding badly from a seven-inch gash in her leg. She needed an emergency transfusion by the time she reached the hospital. The transfusion saved her life.

Johnson began donating blood ten years ago, as a way of giving back.

“A little voice told me that this would be a great way to give back,” she said. “I have been faithfully donating every eight weeks since.”
