Driver, Passenger In Parkway Accident Both Fled Car After Crash

The passenger was struck by another car after she exited the damaged vehicle and tried to cross the roadway, state police say

SOUTH TOMS RIVER, NJ - Both the driver and a passenger in a Ford Focus that crashed into a concrete barrier on the Garden State Parkway northbound late Friday night fled the car after the accident, State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Flynn said.

The passenger, Amy Mathis, 19, Cape May, was seriously injured when she was hit by a Toyota Highlander while she was trying to cross the roadway, Flynn said.

The driver, Jordan Shelton, 19, was later found and arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, he said. No charges were filed against the Toyota driver.

The accident occurred at mile marker 80.8 in South Toms River. The parkway northbound was closed for nearly two hours. The Ocean County Sheriff's Office advised motorists to exit the Parkway northbound at Exit 74, then use Double Trouble Road or Route 9 to Toms River, then re-enter the Parkway at entrance 81.
