Good News: Wunder Wiener Owner is Off Ventilator, Out Of ICU

"A Father's Day miracle" for Gerry LaCrosse, who was severely injured when an SUV plowed into his popular business last week.

BAYVILLE, NJ - Here's some news everyone will be happy to hear.

Gerry LaCrosse, the owner of the Wunder Wiener, is off the ventilator and has been moved out of the intensive care unit at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

"It's a good start to his long road," his niece Charissa Fromm said. "He's not out of the woods yet. It was looking very scary for awhile."

LaCrosse, a longtime Beachwood councilman, suffered multiple injuries and several bleeding after the June 11 accident off Route 9 in Bayville. He was airlifted to the trauma center shortly after the accident.

He was on a ventilator for almost a week before he was taken off it late Sunday and moved out of intensive care, she said.

"It's a Father's Day miracle," Fromm said.

The community has rallied around the popular businessman and public official.

A gofundme accountwas set up for the family to help with expenses five days ago. As of Monday afternoon, $9,380 has been raised out of a $15,000 goal. If you would like to donate, click here.

And the Berkeley P.B.A. 237 and the Beachwood Pine Beach P.B.A. 253 are teaming up to hold a fundraiser for the owner of Der Wunder Wiener and his family on July 5, July 6 and July 7. It will be held on the spot where the popular business was once located.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Police will sell hot dogs and other items similar to what LaCrosse sold in his longtime business in front of the old Beachwood Shopping Center.

LaCrosse has already undergone several surgeries due to the internal bleeding he suffered when he was pinned under the building that was his business and his family's livelihood for more than 30 years.
