History Of Disputes Preceded Neighbor Shooting In Bayville: Reports

BERKELEY, NJ — The recent shooting in the Berkeley Shores neighborhood stemmed from a history of disputes between neighbors, according to reports.

Both authorities and other neighbors said that John Adamo, 54, and the neighbors - not identified by officials, but have been identified by friends as Tom and Jill Kwatkoski - had been feuding for years.

A "no trespassing" sign in the Kwatkoski's yard directly addressed Adamo, a neighbor told CBS New York.

"They've been in a longtime dispute. I don't know what brought it to that point. They have the cameras aimed at each other's houses, but in my book they were all nice," neighbor Joe Spicciatie told CBS.

Other neighbors told PIX11 News that they weren't sure of the details of the dispute. A mutual friend told the news station that it had something to do with loud music.

There was "always friction" between the neighbors, another neighbor told the New York Post, who also called Adamo a "nutjob."

It was shortly before 5 p.m. Monday when Adamo fired a shot at his male neighbor outside of his home, authorities said. He then shot into the house, striking the man's wife.

Adamo went back into his own home, triggering a two-and-a-half hour standoff with the Ocean County SWAT Team that ended with police discovering Adamo dead in his upstairs bedroom. He had turned the gun on himself, dead from an apparent gunshot wound to the head, authorities said.

Both victims were airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where they were in critical but stable condition as of Tuesday morning, according to officials.
