Shellfish Harvesting In Barnegat Bay Area Halted

A treated wastewater leak spilling into the bay may make the shellfish dangerous for consumption.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has halted any further harvesting of shellfish from an area of Barnegat Bay. A leak in the treated water pipe had been found going into the bay, which could make the shellfish harmful to eat.

The suspension began on Friday, October 12, and will remain active until further notice that water is back to the standard quality.
